The Cornish Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in the North America. It was recently featured in Time Magazine alongside other covered bridges scattered throughout Plainfield and nearby Cornish, New Hampshire.

The Saint Gaudens National Historic Site
contains the home, gardens and studios of Augustus Saint Gaudens (1848-1907), one of America's greatest sculptors. This delightful destination displays many of Saint Gaudens own works of art as well as those of other important artists. Sunday afternoon summer concerts are a favorite pastime of residents and visitors alike. A Home Hill packed picnic is the perfect accesory. The site is operational May 1 through Oct. 31 .

The Parrish House Museum  just off the aptly named Maxfield Parrish Highway in Plainfield, New Hampshire  located on the site where Parrish built his home.  He called the house “The Oaks” and here he lived from 1898 to the time of his death in 1966. The Parrish House Museum contains the largest number of original Parrish paintings of any museum in the country, including two magnificent murals which the artist created for his patrons:  Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1918) and Irene DuPont (1933).  The museum opens in mid May, reservations are suggested.

The Cornish Artist Colony
Nearby homes and historic sites of artists and writers including Maxfield Parrish, Winston Churchill (the writer), Charles A. Platt, Stephen Parrish and many other prominent and talented past residents. Many of the artists are commemorated with historic landmarks and plaques throughout the area.

Antiquing opportunities are plentiful throughout the area. The West Lebanon underground flea market is certainly worth a visit. Important auctions are held year-round at the well-known William Smith Auction Gallery in Plainfield.

Sugar Houses: Local farms run the Sugar Houses, which are open seasonally to the public and feature outstanding maple sugar products. Stock up on the sweet, local maple syrup and other maple goodies.

Edgewater and Riverview Farms, located right on River Road offer some of the best strawberry picking around. Edgewater Farm Stand on Route 12A just south of the River Road intersection sells their produce, flowers, and gift items. Riverview is also open for apple picking and pick-your-own pumpkins in the fall. Both farms are on the north end of River Road.

Dartmouth College,
Hanover, NH is the home of the Hopkins Center for the Arts, the Hood Museum, the famous "Big Green" football, hockey, and basketball teams and many fine shops and restaurants. Tours of the grounds are available.

Windsor, VT
is the "birthplace" of Vermont and the site of the signing of the Vermont Constitution. Windsor also houses the Vermont State Craft Center, the American Precision Museum and a handful of enchanting little shops. A division of Simon Pierce pottery and glassblowing is a destination for this charming village. Windsor is approximately 15 minutes away.

Woodstock VT. is a picturesque village with many fine shops and restaurants including Billings Farm Museum. Woodstock is about an hour away.

Mount Ascutney State Park is situated on the highest peak on the Connecticut River Valley and offers a scenic paved road that nearly reaches the summit. It is also ideal for cycling, hiking trails, picnic sites, and spectacular views.

North Star Canoe Rentals is just seven miles south on 12A. This company offers adventurous travelers a unique view of the Connecticut River and its banks. www.kayak-canoe.com

Northern Excursions offers guided lake tours, guided hikes and "custom" tours. Canoe, kayak and float tubes are available for rent and come with life jackets, paddles, and basic paddling and safety instructions. Their shop contains outdoor gear, specialty items and a collection of paintings of Vermont. Ludlow, VT.

Cavendish Trail Horse Rides offers guided trail rides through picturesque meadows and woodland are available on Twenty Mile Stream Road in Cavendish at Brook Farm, the site of Bates Mansion, (just six miles from Okemo Mountain.) Riding experience is not required for this Western saddle-style tour on scenic trails.

Green Mountain Railroad
offers excursion rail trips from Bellows Falls to Chester and returns daily from May through October. The scenic trip uses historic rail cars and travels along rail originally built in the mid 1800's. Special trips for Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Fall Foliage are offered. Mount Kearsarge Indian Museum: New Hampshire residents think of this treasure trove of Native American artifacts as a must-see in the region. Besides seeing such local cultural artifacts as a birch canoe and sweet-grass baskets, you will also find artifacts of the Anasazi Indians of New Mexico. Knowledgeable tour guides lead you through exhibits featuring hundreds of artifacts representing 15,000 years of the history of native peoples.

Simon Pearce Restaurant and Glass-Blowing Center: Irish glass maker Simon Pearce set up shop in a renovated linen mill beside the Ottauquechee River in 1981. Since then, he's turned the complex into a nationally renowned glass blowing center and restaurant serving wonderful food with an Irish influence. The adjoining retail shop is a showcase for the exquisite heavy glassware and pottery made by Simon Pearce and his family at the mill.
